1. Tell us about yourself: Where are you from? When and Where did you pledge?

My name is Juan “CHIWI” Mendoza and I am Ecuadorian and Cuban. I was born in Los Angeles, California and moved to Waterbury CT.  As an undergraduate, I attended Central Connecticut State University and received a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. While at Central, I became active in many organizations on campus.  I quickly noticed that many of the Latino student leaders on campus were Brothers of Lambda Theta Phi.  I was impressed with their professionalism and how they carried themselves on campus and promoted the Latino culture.  I did not have previous knowledge about fraternities except for what I had seen in the mainstream media.   As a result, I had formed a biased opinion that fraternities were just about drinking and partying.  After attending the first information session, I knew Lambda Theta Phi was for me. I also had various interactions with Brothers and observed how they carried themselves, helped one another, and were so proud to promote their heritage. I became a member of Lambda Theta Phi at the Tau Chapter In the fall of 1996. During my time on campus, the Chapter went on to win National Chapter of the Year in 1996. In 1999 I was the recipient of the National Academic Brother of the Year.

2. What degrees do you currently hold and what career path are you currently in?

I graduated Cum Laude from Central Connecticut State University in the spring of 2000 with a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education.   After teaching two years in an inner city school in Hartford, Connecticut   I obtained my state certification.  Upon being certified by the state, I decided to go back to school and pursue a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership.  I graduated in the fall of 2006 from Central Connecticut State University.  Once I completed my Masters Degree, I enrolled in a six-year program at Sacred Heart University.   I have since finished the certification program and passed the state exam. As a result, I currently hold my Administrative Certification, which entitles me to be a Principal of Elementary and Secondary Schools.    I currently work as a Curriculum Specialist at an Elementary School and plan to begin applying for an administrative position.

3. What are some positive aspects of being an Active Alumni of Lambda Theta Phi?

Within the last year, I have become very active and have had the opportunity to interact with many younger Brothers.  I have learned that the brotherhood remains the same and regardless of when you pledged, there will be bonds that unify us as one.  Remaining active In the fraternity has given me the opportunity to guide Brothers, help them succeed as students, and assist them with the transition of joining the work force after college.  I feel that by remaining an active alumnus, It serves as a benefit for expanding our network and serving as mentors to our younger Brothers.

4. As an Alumni and at this point in your life, what do you want from our Great Fraternity?

As an alumnus, I would like for the fraternity to create more opportunities to reunite with older brothers in events that are geared to brothers with careers and families.   It would be ideal to hold regional networking events that allow for you to interact with both younger and older professionals in the workforce.

5. How have you benefited from becoming a Brother of Lambda Theta Phi in your personal and professional life?  What memories, if any, can you share?

Quite frankly, I feel that I can write a dissertation on this topic.  I have experienced so much and benefited greatly from becoming a brother of this family.   The ideals of this fraternity and its induction process has made me culturally aware and given me a great deal of confidence.  As a result, Lambdas has molded me into a true leader.   Ultimately, it has given me a second family and I have formed bonds with brothers that will never be broken.   The national networking aspect of the fraternity has been significantly influential.   The greatest memories that I have Is the night I met my line brothers from southern New Jersey. I also have memories from the numerous road trips to Texas, Florida, California and New Jersey.

6. What are your ultimate goals for your future?  Where do you see yourself?

My ultimate career goal is to pursue a doctoral degree, become a successful school administrator, and some day become a superintendent of schools.
